Youth will work to change the current design of student government in Portland's three high schools and see how these entities might be reshaped to allow for more accessibility and diversity and more decision-making that affects students’ experiences with education.

Young Voices 

Young Voices is a Rhode Island-based non-profit organization that transforms urban youth into powerful advocates, who partner with our State’s major leaders to create systemic reform and policy change that improve the lives of thousands of youth across the state.

Young Voices will continue to build public understanding and support for SCL in several RI schools.

Providence Student Union  

Providence Student Union is a youth organization that supports efforts to improve education in Providence RI. Their mission is building student power to ensure that young people have a fair say in improving their education.

This grant will support Providence Students Union ongoing work, including providing leadership opportunities for youth and campaigns that promote SCL practices.

Build Public Understanding & Demand Granite State Organizing Project

Granite State Organizing Project  

Granite State Organizing Project’s (GSOP) community organizing builds capacity and power in middle, low income and minority communities in Manchester, Nashua and Goffstown. Community organizing empowers people to be effectively involved in defining problems, envisioning effective, bottom up solutions and leading campaigns for positive change. GSOP trains and mentors emerging non-traditional leaders as they take on active roles in the civic life of their communities and advocate for themselves. 
 

Grant Description 

This grant will support GSOP's ongoing work to build public understanding and demand for student-centered learning (SCL) in Manchester NH. Funds will be dedicated to support youth's exposure to SCL schools, oversee the implementation of new policies that are the results of their earlier campaigns, and involvement in NEYON and attendance at the Youth Leadership Institute.

Build Public Understanding & Demand Rhode Island Kids Count

Rhode Island Kids Count 

Rhode Island KIDS COUNT is a statewide children’s policy organization dedicated to improving the health, safety, education, economic well-being, and development of Rhode Island’s children. An independent organization backed by the best research and data available, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT brings together people from across the community, including child advocates and religious leaders, educators and pediatricians, parents and volunteers, nonprofit leaders and state agency directors to address the problems facing the state’s children and families.
  

Grant Description  

This grant of $150,000 will support Rhode Island KIDS COUNT from February 1, 2019 to January 31, 2020 to operate the Rhode Island Alliance to Support College and Career Readiness. This Alliance will help build awareness in RI of the NMEF’s Big Goal of increasing the rate of college and career readiness to 80% by 2030 and awareness and support for the strategies, policies, and public investments needed to achieve this goal.

Build Public Understanding & Demand Roger Williams University

Roger Williams University  

Roger Williams University is a leading higher education institution serving over 6,500 students through their Undergraduate, Graduate, Law and Continuing Studies programs on two campuses in Bristol and Providence Rhode Island. The Center for Youth & Community Leadership in Education (CYCLE) is a new initiative at RWU, located at the School of Continuing Studies in downtown Providence, RI. 
 

Grant Description 

This grant will support CYCLE's ongoing technical assistance to youth groups and the Lead Community Partners as well as parts of the 2019 Youth Leadership Institute.

Build Public Understanding & Demand The Connecticut Forum, Inc.

The Connecticut Forum, Inc. 

The Connecticut YOUTH Forum, a CT Forum program, nurtures high school aged youth in ways that compliment and often go far beyond what their school and home environments can provide. The YOUTH Forum engages 700 teenagers from over 35 Greater Hartford high schools in issue-focused discussions and youth initiated/led activities year-round. Youth are empowered to become effective spokespersons and leaders. 
 

Grant Description  

CT Youth Forum will continue building awareness and support for SCL in Hartford schools. They will also work toward Forum student leaders getting ELO credit for their involvement in the organization.
